Local builders join Habitat to build a home in one week

Thursday, May 22, 2014

It typically takes Habitat for Humanity of Martin County five months to complete a home, but with the concentrated volunteer power provided by local construction trades, they will build a four bedroom, two bathroom home in just one week, June 9-14.

As part of Habitat’s Home Builders Blitz project, local builders and tradesmen are partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Martin County to build a home in partnership with a local family seeking decent and affordable housing in the Carter Park community of Indiantown.

Home Builders Blitz 2014 is a partnership between Habitat for Humanity and the building industry to build homes across the nation. During this nationwide project, Habitat affiliates seek to build and renovate nearly 260 homes, thanks to the skilled labor provided by local professional homebuilders and construction firms. Builders and Habitat affiliates work closely to organize all aspects of building, including securing subcontractors and suppliers, fundraising, and seeking donations of materials. Builders participating in the program this year will work with more than 80 Habitat affiliates.

“Many of Habitat’s most prolific supporters have come from the building community whose members understand the importance of creating strong communities,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “We are incredibly grateful that so many home builders choose to give of their time, talent and resources to help build hope in the lives of families in need of decent shelter.”

Locally, Hooks Construction gathered subcontractors and suppliers to obtain materials and professional labor for the build.

“We enjoy being involved in the community and we support the good work Habitat does in Martin County,” said Steve Hooks, CEO of Hooks Construction. “We are grateful for the overwhelming support from the local building trades. Everyone is coming together for a good cause.”
