STUART, Fla., May 6, 2010 – As Habitat for Humanity of Martin County’s silent auction came to a close, the melodious voice of Frances Langford singing “Pennies from Heaven” filled the air.
The legendary singer and actress passed away in 2005, but Langford’s generosity and love for the Martin County community was alive and strong during a silent auction featuring rare finds and architectural salvage items from her Rio property. The $25,524 raised at the auction will support Habitat’s mission to eliminate substandard housing in Martin County.
The auction featured more than 100 unique items including signs from Langford’s property and Outrigger Resort which sold for as much as $1,500 each, a handcrafted bar decorated with authentic tapa cloth ($6,000), Langford rocks glasses ($750), custom carved full-figure tiki totem ($1,000), furniture and much more.
A Hollywood-themed wrap-up party on May 5 included Langford’s greatest hits, refreshments and a final opportunity to purchase a piece of star-studded history. The event took place at the Habitat for Humanity of Martin County ReStore and bidding closed at 6 p.m. The auction items were awarded to the highest bidders who have until 4 p.m. on May 11 to claim their merchandise.
“We are so grateful to everyone who contributed to this special event – from the donors, volunteers and staff who helped with the deconstruction and salvage of the Frances Langford items, to the generous individuals with the winning bids,” said Margot Graff, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Martin County. “The funds raised from the silent auction will help build homes for deserving families in Martin County and that’s something I think Frances Langford would be very pleased with.”

Bonita Street in Stuart, two blocks southeast of the corner of Indian Street and Old Dixie Highway. Operating hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
